From WordPress to Bespoke: A Journey Back to the Craft

Let me tell you about canoes.

In my late teens, I fell hard for the paddle canoe – that awkward, beautiful craft that most people only encounter on vacation. You know the scene: little red canoes dotting turquoise waters below Lake Louise, tourists splashing about in circles, paddles clacking against gunwales as they struggle to keep a straight line. No skill required. No training needed. Just stability, durability, and a pleasant afternoon on the water.

Mission accomplished, right?

But there's another world of canoeing – one that opens up when you delve deeper into the craft. Slender, graceful vessels that speak directly to your soul. The rocker – that curve of the hull from bow to stern – allows for nimble pivots. Gunwales curve slightly inward, letting skilled paddlers lean the craft until they're sitting almost at the waterline, pulling off maneuvers impossible in those flat, heavy rental boats.

Then there are the materials. Rental canoes are built for abuse: heavy fiberglass, dented aluminum. Tough, sure. But they don't offer connection to beauty or grace.

For that, you need cedar and canvas.

A cedar canoe with good rocker and rounded hull is pure poetry. You glide effortlessly across still waters. You read technical whitewater, finding deep channels and avoiding rocks with precision. The connection between paddle, water, and craft becomes instinctive – almost meditative.

So what does this have to do with web development?

Template-based systems like WordPress are my fiberglass and aluminum canoes. Easy to paddle badly. Forgiving for users with little skill. Slow but stable. Perfect for a safe family outing – you're not going for a surprise swim.

Custom code? That's my cedar and canvas.

PWAs built with modern web technologies are sleek, fast, and infinitely more capable. But they're tippier. They require skill to paddle straight, or you'll find yourself spinning in circles. The trade-off, though? Pure poetry. While WordPress has limits on what it can achieve, custom code opens a world of freedom and possibility.

Which is better?

For me, it's like asking whether I prefer renting a big fiberglass canoe or slipping away in a graceful cedar craft at dawn. One is solid and reliable but slow and limited. The other is fast and agile but demands mastery.

I just know that the moment I dipped that slender paddle into still water and silently glided across an early morning lake, I was never going back.
